Jing - Qi - Shen according to Taoism and Chinese Medicine

In the ancient wisdom of China, it is said, “The sky has the three treasures of the sun, moon, and stars, and people have the three treasures of Jing (Essence), Qi (Energy), and Shen (Mind-Spirit).” These concepts form the bedrock of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Taoist philosophy, encapsulating a holistic view of human health and well-being.

Jing (Essence)

Jing is the foundation of life, the bedrock from which Qi and Shen derive. In TCM, Jing refers to the essential nutrients that constitute the human body and can be classified into prenatal and postnatal essence. Prenatal essence, or Kidney Essence, is the genetic material inherited from one’s parents, stored in the kidneys. Postnatal essence is acquired through the food and nutrients digested and absorbed by the body, often referred to as the “water and grain essence” in ancient texts. Maintaining a sufficient supply of Jing requires a balanced and comprehensive intake of nutrients, ensuring the body’s needs are met.

Qi (Energy)

Qi is the vital energy that animates life, nourishing both Jing and Shen. It is closely associated with the lungs and encompasses the breath we take in as well as the functional power of all internal organs. For instance, Lung Qi is responsible for circulating defensive Qi on the body’s surface, providing warmth and protection. A deficiency in Lung Qi can weaken the immune system, making one prone to illness. Similarly, Spleen Qi transforms food and drink into Qi and blood, distributing these vital substances throughout the body. Factors such as aging, poor diet, overexertion, and emotional stress can deplete the Qi of various organs, leading to health issues like fatigue, poor appetite, and weakened concentration.

Shen (Mind-Spirit)

Shen represents the mind and spirit, the most refined and immaterial of the three treasures. It is linked to the heart and relies on the states of Jing and Qi. Shen draws nourishment from both the prenatal essence stored in the kidneys and the postnatal essence and Qi produced by the lungs, stomach, and spleen. A robust Jing and flourishing Qi support a happy, grounded, and alert Shen, while deficiencies in these elements can lead to mental and emotional instability, including depression and anxiety.

Jing, Qi, Shen and Fertility

In Chinese Medicine, Jing is intimately connected with fertility, representing the genetic essence of the sperm and egg that combine to create life. Deficiency in Jing can manifest as delayed sexual maturity, low ovarian reserve in women, and low sperm production in men. TCM addresses Jing deficiency with proper nutrition, rest, and Chinese herbal therapy, which aim to nourish the body deeply over the long term.

Qi plays a critical role in balancing the body's energy, often disrupted by factors like birth control pills, poor diet, and stress. Through diet adjustments, lifestyle changes, acupuncture, and herbal treatments, TCM helps to restore this balance, enhancing fertility.

Shen, residing in the heart, is affected by emotional stress and anxiety, particularly those related to infertility. Such stress can disrupt the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis, impacting ovulation. TCM treatments for Shen disorders include acupuncture, herbal therapy, and meditation, aiming to soothe the spirit and support emotional well-being.

Electro-acupuncture and Its Impact on Qi

Acupuncture, a key component of TCM, works on Qi to influence Shen and Jing, promoting overall body balance and health. One modern advancement in this practice is electro-acupuncture, which uses electrical stimulation to enhance the traditional acupuncture effects. The acupressure pen or electric acupuncture pen is a tool designed for this purpose, providing a convenient and effective way to stimulate acupuncture points.

Regular use of the electric acupuncture pen can regulate Qi, supporting the health and harmony of Jing and Shen. The tool can be particularly useful for addressing conditions like insomnia, offering a non-invasive way to stimulate specific points that promote relaxation and better sleep.
